May 17th:  Jock Holmen on carving turnings

Jock Holman – Master Wood Carver (aka Norwegian Termite) will demonstrate the layout and carving techniques that can be used to decorate turned pieces. Richard Tendick will supply the turned object and Jock will carve it live while explaining the techniques with humorous running commentary.

Jock began his professional woodworking career in 1976 in Chicago and named his business “Norwegian Termite”, demonstrating both his heritage and sense of humor (after all, a woodcarver is just a “creative” termite). He has built unique, custom-designed furniture, cabinetry, fireplace mantels, exterior accent pieces, inlaid flooring, and other decorative items, utilizing various wood species, finishes and styles.

Since relocating his business to Minnesota in 2000, Jock has received many awards including the Gold Medal in woodcarving in 2009 at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American National Juried Exhibitions in Decorah, Iowa. He is a six-time award ribbon winner at the Vesterheim exhibitions, and won the First Place Carving award at the 2005 Northern Woods Exhibition in Minneapolis.  He has appeared on television in the Twin Cities and Chicago areas, and is a frequent speaker and demonstrator at woodworking and Scandinavian festivals in the Midwest. And now he has agreed to speak to us. . You won’t want to miss this chance to improve your skills and have fun at the same time..
