Upcoming Meetings

Tuesday, March 17: Turning, with presenter Tom Sciple

Tom, an award-winning turner, will show some of the items you can make with a 10" Jet Mini-lathe. He will demo making wine stoppers from both wood and acrylic materials. If time permits, Tom will also demo how to turn decorative fan/chain pulls and show some necklaces that can also be turned on small or large lathes.

Tom's Bio: Tom Sciple began his wood-turning in Mobile, AL in 1995. He started off on a Craftsman lathe and quickly became hooked. He joined the local wood-turning club where he served as editor, program chairman and president; and taught at the local Woodcraft store. Tom also received instruction at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, TN from Ray Key, Ben Pho, Mark Gardner, Mathew Hill and a one-on-one with Lyle Jamison Tom is a traditional wood-turner much like Ray Key in that all of his bowls, vases and pepper/salt mills are turned with no carvings or enhancements, letting the natural beauty and grain (God's handiwork) show through.

In 2005 Tom relocated to Maryville, TN and he purchased a new OneWay lathe. He joined the local Smoky Mountain Wood turning Club and the East TN woodworkers Guild where he served as program chairman and president. In April, 2016 he relocated to Minnesota to be with their daughter and grandchildren. Tom is currently a member of the Minnesota Wood-turners Association and Minnesota Woodworkers Guild.

Tom won the Best Turning Award for his "Birdseye Redwood Round Box" at the 2019 Northern Woods Exhibition.
