Seminar Schedule
- Day One (Friday, November 5th):
-
- Thomas will do an hour long presentation about his work and take questions from the audience.
- Day Two (Saturday, November 6th):
-
- The Essential Details Of Greene & Greene. This daylong workshop will start with an overview of the Greene brothers work in the form of a discussion and slideshow.
I will discuss the importance of surface relief, texture, and shadow and how they relate to the Arts and Crafts. I will demonstrate cloud lift techniques, fabrication of raised ebony pegs,
breadboard end splines, cloud lift gussets, leg indent detail, three bar detail, and various edge details. By the end of this workshop all the participants will have a working understanding
of how to incorporate these details into their own projects. Finished samples will be available for inspection before, during and after the presentation.
- Day Three (Sunday, November 7th)
- Designing in the language of Greene & Greene. During this session we will look at what distinguishes Arts & Crafts design from other styles and focus on the specific niche Greene & Greene
became famous for. We will integrate the details learned earlier and apply them as elements in an evolving design language. We will look at how setting, use and placement affect design
decisions as well as material choice and joinery technique. We will discuss grain matching, wood movement, veneering, edge details, bread board ends, doors, drawers and how each element
relates to the whole. Particular emphasis will be given to weight and balance of design while maintaining a specific focus on the excellence of craftsmanship needed to parallel the
Greene & Greene standard.
- Creating Authentic Hammered Copper Hardware. One of the most alluring elements of original Arts and Crafts antiques is the hand hammered and patinated copper hardware.
We will cover the types of material needed to create and patinate a horizontal and vertical ring pull with bale. Methods to create the textured back plate will be demonstrated
along with techniques for creating the bale and ring pull.
